Course Title Crown Lengthening Workshop with Pig Jaw Surgery

Course Description Crown extension is one of the most commonly required procedures in restorative dentistry, yet it is often underutilized. Enjoy an in-depth look at the evidence-based concepts and practical applications for Clinical Crown Lengthening and learn how to enhance predictability for your restorations and impressions. Gain the peace of mind that you are current in your treatment planning choices. Techniques are discussed for both Functional and Esthetic Crown Lengthening. Including: how to handle hard and soft tissues; proper surgical techniques; preservation of esthetics in the final tissue contours; and relocation of all structures that comprise the biologic width, namely: sulcus, junctional epithelium, connective tissue fibers, and bone. This course includes hands-on exercises and many case illustrations, plus two video demonstrations of surgical technique. The full day workshop offers the opportunity to practice these procedures on pig jaws and anatomically correct models. The workshop is suitable for clinicians with or without surgical experience, who want to do some or most of their own crown extensions or just want to know more about the subject. Participants will learn:

  • How to make predictable impressions every time
  • Why crowns come loose and how to prevent it
  • Methods that save chair time and increase profit
  • Causes of red gum tissue around margins
  • How to diagnose esthetic crown lengthening
  • To understand the Gummy Smile
  • How to coordinate surgery with restorative procedures

Course Title: Injection Molding and the Bioclear Technique for Composites Workshop (Hands-On)

Course Description Get started with Bioclear and the Bioclear Method in this live, hands-on workshop with Bioclear Certified instructors. The Bioclear Method allows you to create predictable, repeatable, outcomes that look natural when using composite. By offering a compelling minimally invasive alternative that meets a patient’s needs and exceeds their expectations, you will no longer have to turn to implants or computer-assisted ceramics. Diastema closures, black triangle closures, Class II, III, and IV composite restorations are just the start of what can be done with the Bioclear Method. Learn first-hand from Bioclear Certified Instructors as they introduce attendees to the benefits of the Bioclear Method.

Learning Objectives:

  • Build familiarity with the principles of warmed composite
  • Learn the injection molding technique using warmed flowable and paste composite resin
  • Discover the benefits of injection molding into special Black Triangle matrices
  • Close a black triangle and create a mirror-like finish with invisible margins
  • Understand how to avoid common mistakes that lead to less-than-satisfactory results when performing anterior composites
  • Receive an updated, hands-on evaluation of modern matrices, wedges, and separators
  • Learn and perform the three steps to achieve rock-solid posterior composite contacts

Dr. Carroll is also a leader in innovation, and an early adopter of ground breaking technology like the T-Scan III used by less than 5% of offices in South Florida. His attention to new developments that can improve the comfort and outcomes of patients has made him one of the most sought after dentists in the region. “It is important to be attentive to the changes in the industry because advances can improve care, lessen discomfort and increase the predictability of procedures. I adopt new techniques and materials not because they are new and shiny but because they will improve the care of patients.”

FRIDAY – TRACK 3 – 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

Course Title:In-house end-to-end restorative workflows: Building your practice plan to maximize your investment in digital dentistry

Course Description: Digital dentistry technologies and techniques have evolved substantially in recent years, allowing for more complex in-office workflows. In this course, Dr. Jennifer Bell will review two clinical scenarios where the use of an intraoral scanner expedites the delivery of direct anterior restorations and digitally fabricated removable dentures in a more predictable and efficient way. Dr. Jennifer Bell will explain the process step by step, featuring multiple clinical cases for us to work on together in a hands-on experience with both direct restorative and removable applications. Each of the elements will be presented with a theory-based approach, then evolving to a practical activity to demonstrate the techniques. The comprehensive hands-on portion covers initial scanning protocol, Exocad restoration design, 3D printing, and direct injected template restorations made in the mouth. You will discover:

  • The advantages of digital scanning to improve treatment planning and case acceptance of restorative procedures
  • Restorative applications for every part of the practice including indirect, direct, removable and implant procedures
  • How to add value to your workflow with exocad chairside solutions and 3D Printing

Course Title: Soft Tissue Grafting with Pig Jaw Surgery

Course Description Learn evidence-based solutions for the soft tissue challenges you face on a daily basis, and how to cover those exposed roots and predictably stop recession. In this workshop, methods are illustrated to solve those problems and enhance your restorative results. Gain peace of mind knowing the gingiva stays in place by the margins of newly placed esthetic crowns.Participants will experience an in-depth look at the concepts and practical applications for both Free Gingival and Connective Tissue Grafts.

  • Gingival Grafts create zones of attached gingiva where neither root coverage nor esthetics are factors.  They provide a predictable way to stop recession from progressing.
  • Connective Tissue Grafts are useful for total root coverage in cases of severe recession, especially in the maxilla where esthetics are important.

The full day workshop offers the opportunity to practice both procedures on pig jaws. This workshop is for dentists who want to offer soft tissue grafting or learn more about enhancing esthetic restorative results.  The course includes hands-on exercises and many case illustrations, plus two surgical videos of the grafting procedure will be shown. Participants will learn:

  • Diagnostic criteria for each graft
  • To gain root coverage
  • To predictably stop recession, or to prevent it in the esthetic zone
  • Step-by-step harvesting, placing and suturing
  • Step-by-step use of specialized instruments

Course Title: Update to Dental Materials

Course Description: 90% of crowns and bridges are now fabricated from a ceramic material according to a report from one of the largest US dental laboratories.  Ceramic materials do not handle the same as metal-based restorations and improper selection or handling can lead to premature failure.  This course will teach you how to select and handle different types of ceramic materials that are currently used in dentistry that will be much less confusing than typical marketing rhetoric.  The ability to bond these dental ceramics allows the practitioner to perform more conservative tooth preparations.  As there are many different types of dental ceramics available (zirconia, lithium disilicate, porcelain, processed composite, etc), determining the correct protocol for each type of ceramic can be confusing.  This lecture aims to simplify the process of bonding ceramics and provide the clinician with a protocol that can be used to bond any type of dental ceramic.  In this course, we will review the best clinical practices based on research studies conducted at the UAB School of Dentistry and provide pearls for you to take back to the office.

Course objectives

  1. Review the different types of dental ceramic materials
  2. Choosing a ceramic material for anterior restorations
  3. Preparation and design considerations for posterior crowns and bridges
  4. Strategies to adjust, polish and cut off ceramic crowns
  5. Review the indications for bonding dental ceramics
  6. Present a protocol for preparing the surface of ceramic crowns (ie etching, sandblasting, priming, cleaning)
  7. Classify the types of cements used for adhesive bonding
