Education » Fellowship (FAGD) » Take the Fellowship Exam
Taking the comprehensive, 400-question exam is one step toward achieving Fellowship. And it can be taken as early as your first year of active membership.
The exam stresses clinical applications of accepted dental knowledge, techniques, and procedures, and consists of multiple-choice questions, administered in two, three-hour sessions. The exam in computer format is offered year-round at Prometric Testing Centers and the paper and pencil version is given at the AGD Annual Meeting.
About 90 percent of our members successfully pass the exam the first time. Our exam study tools can help you prepare.
Apply to take the exam at the annual meeting, Prometric centers (computerized exam), or a DANTES (for military personnel outside the U.S. and Canada).
You may take the exam on computer, which is offered year-round at a Prometric Testing Center. If you wish to take the computerized exam version, complete the application at least two weeks before the date you select for testing. Registration tends to fill up quickly during the months of October, November and December so call to schedule your appointment to take the exam at least three weeks in advance of the date you plan to take the exam.
The Academy will process your payment, alert the testing center that you are eligible to take the exam and contact you with a national registration number. Computerized exams can be taken at Prometric Testing Centers all across the U.S. and Canada, and are open six days a week, excluding holidays. No prior computer experience is necessary.
The exam in written format is offered at the Annual Meeting, usually held in July. You can register separately or with your annual meeting registration. You must register prior to the annual meeting (May 15, 2005) to take the exam on-site.
Members who are in the military and stationed overseas may register online to take the exam at a DANTES facility, given at the same time as the annual meeting site.
To avoid a penalty, you must cancel at least 48 hours in advance of your testing date at a Prometric Center. Less than 48 hours notice will result in a penalty of $100 upon rescheduling. Canceling the July exam, which is given at the Annual Meeting, less than 20 days in advance, or failure to cancel, results in a cancellation fee of $50.
If your FAGD exam score is within five points of a passing score, you may retake the next version of the exam at no charge at the AGD Annual Meeting or for $150 at a computer testing center.
The Academy of General Dentistry will grant special accommodations for the Fellowship Examination (FAGD) to an candidate taking the paper and pencil version of the FAGD Examination who:
The Academy reserves the right to authorize the use of auxiliary aids or modifications in such a way as to maintain the integrity and security of the examination process.
